Caring for the families that Care for the Rare

International Ranger Day

In the world of conservation, we are all acutely aware that people are both the root of any problem, and the path to any solution. Whilst there are a handful of iconic conservation heroes out there, they all stand on the shoulders of giants; conservation is, and will always be, a collective endeavour involving communities and society at large.

The pivotal role communities play in the success of any conservation program, extends beyond the civilians living in close proximity to wildlife; at the heart of the conservation equation are the dedicated rangers and conservationists who work tirelessly to protect ecosystems and the species that inhabit them, and literally put their life on the line to do so. Their long-term commitment is central to any successful conservation initiative. As someone fortunate enough to have been embedded with amazing teams of rangers around the world, I've experienced the thrill and satisfaction of their invaluable work, and gained immeasurable knowledge and insights from them for which I'm forever grateful. However, during these comparatively short stints, it’s far too easy to get carried away with the experience, and overlook the profound impact this lifestyle can have on these dedicated individuals and their families, day in, day out.

Over time, rangers gain invaluable experience, becoming even more effective in protecting the world’s precious biodiversity, and so to preserve and capitalise on this knowledge, it is vital to create supportive frameworks that enable their families and communities to thrive.

Recognising and honouring the commitment of rangers goes hand in hand with safeguarding their well-being, and that of their families. Failing to do so is not only ethically questionable, it undermines the long-term effectiveness of conservation endeavours.
